Mount of Olives Baptist Church had wanted to start a new church in Duluth for a long time.  They knew that throughout history, God has used new churches in particularly powerful ways to touch the lives of people who don’t yet know Him.  There were two things that stood in their way: 1) they didn’t have the money and 2) they didn’t have a pastor.   All that changed in 2007 when Mount of Olives sold their former church building and agreed to commit a significant portion of the proceeds to church planting.  Shortly after that, it became apparent that God had raised up a church planting pastor from within their own church body.  Erik Reinertsen had come to Christ at Mount of Olives around 1998, had been discipled there by Pastor Duncan Ross and others, and had been serving as the youth and young adult director for the previous 4 years.  Though Erik did not have formal seminary training, it was clear that God had gifted and called him to be a lead pastor.

In October of 2008, after receiving a positive recommendation from the national Assessment Center 4 Church Planters in Green Lake, WI, and the blessing of their church, Erik and his wife Jessica prayerfully went about recruiting a group of 55 bold and wonderful people (half of whom were kids!) who agreed to leave the comforts of their home churches to start The Water’s Edge.

In November 2008, the “launch team” began to meet Sunday evenings at Lakeview Christian Academy school in Duluth Heights.  They spent time praying, getting to know each other, and talking about what they needed to do to begin to accomplish the mission God had laid on their hearts.

The Water’s Edge held its first public worship service on March 15th, 2009 at LCA.  Almost 200 people packed the little chapel!  It was a day we’ll never forget.  We truly believe God is at work in and through the lives of our people.  We are excited to see what He has planned for the future, and we hope you’ll come and join us!
